June 19th..yet another celebration.
It’s a hundred years since women gained the right to vote here in Iceland and to celebrate the Icelandic government has encouraged employers to allow their staff to take the afternoon off in order to take part in celebrations marking the event.
Actually on the same day June 19th 1915 labourers also gained the right to vote, until then they had been unable to. Although women had gained the right to vote they had to be aged forty or over, but gradually by 1931 the age limit had been reduced to 25 the same as men.
