Iceland - How has the fishing been this year?

Salmon fishing season in Iceland has been one of the very best since we started to collect data from our rivers. It will end in the top 5 seats in numbers of salmon caught.

Some of our rivers in North West Iceland have broken all records with more catch than ever before. A lot of the fish is grilse which gives us hope for a good 2SW salmon season 2016.

While the West and some of our southern rivers have been doing really well the situation has been a bit tougher (not bad, but tougher) in some of our rivers in the North and in the North East. Part of the reason is due to hard conditions, heavy rain and a lot of snow melting until mid/late season. But NB! we often have really good years after slower years so when deciding where to fish for 2016 I recommend you take a look at the statistics over several previous years rather than just the year before.

The bookings for 2016 are beginning to come in and some of the prime times have been already been booked, therefore if you are planning a fishing holiday for next year, my advice is to plan ahead for next year as soon as you can.

Here you can see the number of salmon caught in some of our best rivers in Iceland

NB! There is more than salmon in Iceland, an interesting option is to fish for trout in the spring (lake and river) and for char in summer/late summer. Our highland fishing has been a huge success, no luxuries, but a lot of trout/char and wilderness.
