New Year's Eve traditions in Iceland
New Year's Eve in Iceland is celebrated with the gathering of family and friends at home where people dress up and dine good food. After the dining people visit a local bonfire which is an old age customs and tradition of the celebration of New Year's. The bonfires are in nearly all towns in Iceland and just on the capital area there are 18 bonfires in total, in various of sizes.
Most Icelanders buy their own fireworks, the majority buys the fireworks from the Icelandic volunteer rescue team to show them support. On midnight the fireworks are set off to welcome in the New Year.
