FLY FISHING – ARGENTINA, RIO GRANDE
Fly fishing for Sea trout on the Rio Grande river in South Argentina, Tierra del Fuego. Iceland Outfitters will arrange a hosted fly fishing trip to Rio Grande on 5th-14th February 2016. Here is a chance to travel somewhere totally different for a fantastic fishing experience. The famous Finnish fly fisher Jouni Rauha will host our group in Rio Grande which is one of the best Sea trout rivers in the world. There is nowhere in the world with as many Sea trout as there are in the rivers of Tierra del Fuego. Apart from being so many they are also very big, the average size of the Sea trout in Rio Grande is 4-5 kg. Although during every season many Sea trout are caught weighing over 8 kg and the biggest ones being over 10 kg. We are sure that you will enjoy both the superb fishing of the Rio Grande and Menendez rivers as well as the outstanding quality of the service, food and accommodation at Aurelia Lodge.
The Rio Grande originates at the White Lake in Chile and is widely considered the finest sea run Brown trout river in the world, flowing west to east into the Atlantic Ocean. The river is roughly 160 km long with 70 km of its length flowing through Argentine territory. The landscape of Tierra del Fuego is a sparsely populated wilderness. Large sheep farming ranches share this land with wild guanacos, grey foxes, beavers and condors, making it a fantastic place to visit. The fly fishing average catch results on the Rio Grande have steadily improved earning it the reputation as the world’s finest sea run Brown trout fishery, this being due to access control and a persistent promotion of catch and release, and all this in the last ten years.
Fly fishing will be done on the private Aurelia lodge beat on Rio Grande river, which is a medium size 20-25 m wide river, with gentle gradients and easily waded, gravel-bottom pools. These pools can be covered adequately with a single-handed rod, but double-handers have become popular and deal with the famous Tierra del Fuego winds more efficiently. Aurelia Lodge’s pools are ideal fly water, they are varied and interesting with island pools, traditional runs, undercut banks and meanders. Aurelia Lodge offers 9,5 km of double bank fishing on the Rio Grande and 24 km of double bank fishing on the Rio Menendez, a main tributary of the Rio Grande. The Rio Menendez is a smaller, 10-15 m wide river, with more intimate water and is a bit more technical. Wading the Rio Menendez requires a stealthier approach and frequently smaller flies, and presents a challenge that appeals to experienced anglers.
The maximum number of rods is 8 fishing these beats. There is always a local fishing guide per 2 fly fishermen. The local fishing guide will drive you by car to the river and show you where to cast. They speak english adequately and know the fishing places like the back of their hands. Both single and double handed fly rods can be used on the Rio Grande (AFTM class 7-10, rod length 9′-15′). A large Sea trout has plenty of room to run and fishing hours are often allocated when the fishing is best. Fishing is ‘catch and release’ only. The best season for this excellent fly fishing is from February 1st until 30th of April.
Guests will leave the lodge around 8:00 after breakfast each day, fishing until around 12:00. Lunch will be served in a new comfortable cabin, just 10 minutes from the river and there you can relax, visit the fly shop and enjoy the traditional siesta in spacious double rooms. Guests return to the river between 17:00 and 18:00 and fish through until dusk.
