As the snow melts, life returns to the rivers

April 1st marked the beginning of the spring fishing season in Iceland, bringing anglers back to the rivers after the long winter. Since then, the rivers have presented a range of early spring conditions.

The landscape is slowly awakening; while the grass is only now beginning to green, temperatures have been rising steadily, and it won’t be long until the sun remains above the horizon almost 24 hours a day.

Over the past month, anglers have had the chance to experience the diversity of Icelandic spring fishing, casting for brown trout, sea trout, and the occasional arctic char.

Weather patterns have shifted between sunny spells and cooler spring days, creating varied and dynamic conditions on the water.

  • Hólaá River opened well, with early catches mostly consisting of brown trout, along with some arctic char. Hólaá has been steady and is one of our go-to day tour rivers.

  • The troutbeat on the West Rangá river have provided opportunities for anglers to connect with trophy-sized wild brown trout and have produced some beautiful fish.

  • On the lower beats of the West Rangá River and at Leirá River, some beautiful sea trout have been landed, setting the tone for the rest of the spring season.

In just over a month, the first salmon of the year will journey into the West Rangá, Leirá, Þjórsá rivers, and other rivers in Iceland.
