Hólsá West bank

The Hólsá River west bank is one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets. Each summer, thousands of wild Atlantic salmon pass through these waters on their journey upstream to their home rivers. Located in South Iceland, the river offers a peaceful and scenic setting for a unique fishing experience. The Hólsá River begins where the West Rangá and East Rangá rivers come together in the lowlands of South Iceland.

The area not only offers Atlantic salmon fishing, but also holds a healthy population of sea trout. Both the West Rangá and Hólsá rivers are home to sea trout that spawn in the surrounding creeks and streams. These fish are highly prized by anglers for their strength and thrilling fights.

Fishing is exclusively available during the peak salmon season, from July to August.

Accommodation is not included with trips to the Hólsá west bank, but we’ll be happy to assist you in finding suitable lodging nearby if needed.

The fishing

This beat allows a maximum of two rods (permits) per day, and anglers can choose between fly fishing or spinning—both methods work very well. It’s an ideal setup for 2 to 4 people, as rod sharing is allowed. This is a common and convenient tradition in Iceland, making salmon fishing more flexible and budget-friendly.

The beat is suitable for anglers of all experience levels. Salmon often prefer swimming close to the riverbank, making them accessible even for beginners who want to try fly fishing for the first time. The bank is open and easy to navigate, and the surroundings are peaceful, with views of distant mountains.
