About
Svörtuklettar is a unique and scenic fishing spot located on the northwestern shore of Lake Þingvallavatn – Iceland’s largest spring-fed lake, nestled within the historic Þingvellir National Park. This location offers an ideal setting for a day tour, where anglers can try their luck fishing for wild brown trout and Arctic char, surrounded by volcanic cliffs and untouched natural beauty.
In spring, brown trout are most active in the deeper waters near the cliffs and by the mouth of the Móakotsá stream. At this time of year, long casts with sinking lines are often necessary to reach the fish, especially when casting from the cliff edges. As summer approaches, Arctic char become more common in the area and are typically found in the shallower parts of the lake, where lighter setups and more delicate presentations are recommended. On calm days in July and August, it is possible to experience excellent dry fly fishing conditions, offering peaceful and memorable moments for anglers.

Recommended flies: We recommend using a variety of streamers for brown trout, with patterns such as the Black Ghost, Nobbler, Grey Ghost, and Olive Ghost often proving effective. Arctic char tend to favor nymphs, although the silvery variant known as sílableikja (smelt-eating char) may also take streamers. Popular nymph patterns include the Peacock, Killer, Watson’s Fancy, and Pheasant Tail.
Recommended tackles: Single-handed rods. 9-10 feet, weight 4-7, floating line or sinking lines in spring.
