It’s very popular to use tube flies and flies on treble or double hooks in a wide range of colors, such as the Red Francis, Sunray Shadow, Bismo Blue, Silver Sheep, Black and Blue, and many more. The typical tube size for West Rangá ranges from 2” to 1/4”, either unweighted or with the use of a brass body or cone heads. For double and treble hooks, sizes #10 – #14 are popular. The Red/Black Francis can be deadly when tied on a gold or silver VMC-style treble hook. It’s best to choose a fly with some flash for optimal results.
Colors:
Blue can be used throughout the season and is the most popular color for the West Rangá River.
Yellow is a mid-summer color and starts to be effective in early July and on sunny days.
Red: Red is the color of late July and August. It is also good for bigger fish in July.
Orange: Orange is the warrior of autumn and is the most popular color when the Icelandic days start to get shorter.
Black: Black can be used throughout the season. It often works best when mixed with other colors, where black is the main color on the fly and any of the above are the secondary color.
West Rangá is one of the best salmon rivers in Iceland, celebrated for its outstanding fishing. Even though we mentioned only these colors, anglers have also had great success with purple, turquoise, and more.
