The peninsula is known for incredibly beautiful and dramatic landscapes and is known amongst Icelanders as the only part of Iceland where you can see all of the unique natural elements in one place. The landscape includes majestic mountains, lava fields, volcanoes, a mystical glacier, black and white beaches, high cliffs with rock arches, basalt columns, and wildlife such as seals and ocean birds. It makes it a photographer‘s paradise. Snaefellsnes National Park was established in 2001 to protect this area’s unique landscape.

The magnificent Snaefellsjökull volcano, covered with a glacier towers over the peninsula. It is known from the book of Jules Verne “Journey to the center of the Earth”.  According to the novel, the crater is an ancient entrance to the subterranean world.

Snæfellsjökull, according to legends and folk beliefs, has been considered to be one of the world’s ancient power sites, a source of mysticism and energy.

You can see the volcano from Arnarstapi village where you can also take a walk along magnificent cliffs with rock arches, where puffins and other ocean birds nest in the summertime.
